Students

Students are an integral part of the work of the Center for Social Gerontology.  Students are welcome to become involved in the work of the Center on many levels. In addition we support student development in gerontology through teaching and research.

The Gerontology Interdisciplinary Minor

A middle-aged woman provides companionship to an elderly woman.

The Gerontology Interdisciplinary minor focuses on the impacts of age on society and the impacts of age on the psychological, physical, social and economic experiences of individuals. A minor in gerontology complements any discipline by providing students with expertise in the aging experience relative to their major area of study.

What Can You Do with a Minor in Gerontology?

You may find work in a variety of positions, including:

  • State Government or the nonprofit sector
  • As a geriatric social worker, a geriatric nurse, geriatric physical or occupational therapist or many other health professions focusing on later life
  • Design and implement recreational programs for older adults
  • Work in public health designing and implementing prevention programs for older adults
  • Work in senior housing or a senior living community
  • Assist with retirement planning, marketing to older adults or many other business positions focusing on later life

How to Become a Geriatric Social Worker 

Geriatric social workers help seniors navigate life’s challenges as they also deal with the complex realities of aging. From a biopsychosocial perspective, geriatric social workers assist their clients with services ranging from case management to resource referral to treatment planning. Geriatric social workers also provide advocacy for their clients and the senior population at large. Some may even work on management and policy level to improve services and legislation for seniors.
